Peter McLean

Pete began his entrepreneurial journey while studying at Edinburgh Napier University, launching a Scottish hamper company inspired by his love of local food and drink. When he recognised the business was largely seasonal, he pivoted, opening a café that expanded into a catering service, and eventually evolved into a wholesale bakery. Over 13 years, Pete scaled the company to a team of 39, gaining hands-on experience in every challenge (and triumph) that comes with building a business from the ground up.

Today, Pete has returned to Edinburgh Napier as Enterprise Manager, where he supports students, staff, and alumni in exploring entrepreneurship in all its forms, from weekend side projects and freelance careers to ambitious start-ups seeking investment. He is especially proud of launching the Freelance Academy, which has helped over 1,500 people turn their skills into income and opportunity.

After delivering a BRT workshop, Pete was inspired to practise what he preaches by launching a TikTok channel @freelancepete sharing advice, insights, and encouragement around freelancing and starting a business. What began as an experiment has grown into a community of over 37,000 followers, offering a fresh and accessible way to connect with and support emerging entrepreneurs.
